Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) for Age-related Macular Degeneration

What is Dry AMD?

Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disease due to aging. It involves the accumulation of Drusen that eventually leads to degeneration of the Photoreceptors and Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE), resulting in irreversible loss of central vision. It is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world.

Current treatment for Dry AMD

The main risk factor for Dry AMD is age. There is limited therapeutic options in Dry AMD, beyond dietary advice (Diets rich in antioxidants and AREDS supplements in suitable cases) and smoking cessation.

What is PMB with LLLT?

Photobiomodulation with Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is a pioneering treatment for Dry AMD. The technology uses LED light that acts on retina to boost cells energy and reducing oxidative stress, thus slowing down the progression of AMD.

The LightWave I Study, a multicentre, randomised double-masked controlled trial, has shown that PBM with LLLT significantly reduceddrusen volume and significantly improved visual acuity, proving its potential to slowing the progression of the disease and preventing its advanced stages.

PBM with LLLT is:

> Safe
> Non-invasive
> Painless
> Fast (12′ Both Eyes)
