Flashes and Floaters
What are flashes and floaters?
With advancing age, the likelihood of developing floaters increases. These visual disturbances are more prevalent in individuals over the age of 40, with a higher frequency observed in those in their 60s and 70s. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for younger individuals to also experience floaters. The vitreous humour, located in the center of the eye, can undergo changes as one ages, leading to a decrease in firmness and the emergence of collagen strands that may become visible. These strands may exhibit a swirling motion as the eyes move. Typically, light passes through the transparent vitreous humour layer to reach the retina, which is responsible for converting visual stimuli into images and transmitting them to the brain. Floaters, as they move through the eye’s fluid, have the potential to cast shadows, impacting one’s visual perception.
Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)
Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a prevalent condition associated with the presence of floaters, particularly in individuals aged 65 and older. The aging process leads to changes in the vitreous humour, resulting in a shift where the central portion becomes more liquid while the outer vitreous layer peels away from the retina. The formation of floaters is attributed to the aggregation of collagen within the vitreous humour. In addition to floaters, individuals with PVD may experience flashing lights as another symptom. This occurrence is linked to the outer vitreous layer exerting traction on the light-sensitive retina, prompting the brain to interpret these sensations as light signals.
Floaters may not be a concern for most individuals, as they are often simply a distraction. However, it is important to recognize that floaters could potentially indicate a more serious underlying condition, such as retinal detachment. If you experience acute symptoms of flashes and floaters, we recommend that you have a detailed eye examination by an eye-care professional.
Symptomatic floated can be effectively treated with Vitreo Retinal Surgery.
