What is Retinal Detachment?

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a natural ageing change of the vitreous humor of the eye. In a small minority of individuals, PVD can result in a tear in the retina. Retinal detachment can follow when fluid seeps under the retina tear, causing the retina to separate from the wall of the eye.

There are no known preventive measures. However, individuals with myopia, a history of eye surgery (such as cataract surgery), eye trauma, or a familial predisposition to retinal detachment are at increased risk of experiencing this serious condition.

The vast majority of retinal detachments can be effectively treated with Vitreo Retinal Surgery.
